India has been described as the land of spirituality, rituals and mystical customs. Every nook and corner of this land oozes a charm that takes you on a sacred voyage. Hundreds of deep rooted beliefs, hundreds of spiritual thoughts followed by vivid customs bless this land of incredibility. From Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the south; from Saurashtra in the west to Silchar in the east, India is dotted with significant pilgrimage sites which are either dedicated to Hindu deities or Buddhist lamas or Sikh Gurus.

 

Several of the world’s major religions were born in India, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. People in India practise their religions overtly, and take their spiritual beliefs very seriously. Let us walk you through some of the most blessed spiritual destinations of India.

 

Chardham Yatra

One of the most valued pilgrimage circuits in India; the Chardham Yatra is associated with the four major Hindu temples of the Garhwal Himalaya namely Gangotri, Yamnotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Yamunotri is the first halt to this religious trip and Badrinath is the last. The temple of Yamunotri is dedicated to Yamuna, the daughter of Sun God while Gangotri is the seat of goddess Ganga who is believed to be the cleanser of all sins. The last pilgrimage site of this circuit is Badrinath where Lord Vishnu resides in his Shaligram form.

 

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Kailash Man Sarovar Yatra is one of the most spiritual Hindu pilgrimage sites, popular among the Hindus across the world. The site is situated on the highly impressive mountain peak of Mount Kailash, located in the Himalayan mountain ranges of Tibet. Offering majestic views, this religious destination is referred to as the Earthly abode of Lord Shiva, and is highly esteemed by the Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and the followers of a Tibetan religion called Bon.

 

Amarnath Yatra

Amarnath Yatra is a spiritual journey to the temple of Amarnath. Every devoted Hindu wishes to embark on this journey at least once in his or her lifetime. This pilgrimage site is located in Jammu and Kashmir, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple houses a naturally appearing Ice Lingam which is found inside a cave. The Yatra commences during the 45 days period of July and August which coincides with the Hindu month of Shravana.

 

Vaishno Devi

The spiritual journey of Vaishno Devi requires devotion, zeal and dedication towards the destination. The Yatra of Vaishno Devi is towards the temple of Maa Durga located at the Tirkut Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir. Vaishno Devi is considered as the incarnation of Goddess Durga and her shrine is considered among the 108 Shakti Peethas found across the globe.

 

Varanasi

A spiritual journey in India is incomplete without a visit to Varanasi. Experiencing a boat ride along the holy River Ganges lets you feel the serenity that surrounds this place. Hindus believe that a holy dip in this river washes away all your sins, and the devotee is released from the cycle of rebirth. Varanasi is one of the seven holiest cities and one of the twelve jyotir linga sites of India. In Hinduism it is believed that those who die and are cremated here get an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and re-births.

 

Kumbh Mela

The largest yet the most crowded peaceful religious gathering in the world, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times every twelve year. Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik and Ujjain are the four divine places where Kumbh Mela takes place in grand manner. This unique fair is associated with many deep rooted religious beliefs. Kumbh Mela is held on the banks of four spiritually imbibed rivers called Ganga, Triveni (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati), Godawari and Shipra.

 

Hemkund Sahib

Hemkun Sahib Pilgrimage tour is only one of its kinds in India. The tour is made by devoted Sikhs around the world. The yatra is associated with a famous Gurudwara of the world called Hemkund Sahib which is known to be the highest Gurudwara in the world. The Gurudwara is located in Uttarakhand in the lap of Himalaya where a crystal clear lake enhances its enigmatic aura. The Gurudwara is dedicated to the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Govind Singh Ji.

 

Puri Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra is a common event in India, where chariots of Hindu deities are drawn on road. But the Rath yatra in Puri is the one that is a major crowd puller. It becomes a gathering of millions, and the festival is held in the Hindu month of Ashada (July) on the second day of the new moon when the three deities of the temple namely Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken out of the main temple for a procession which ends at Gundicha Temple. It is believed that people having a glimpse of Jagannath Prabhu during Ratha Yatra or touching the rope of the chariot gain the fortune of many pious deeds.

 

Ajmer Sharif

A sacred shrine in Ajmer, Dargah Sharif is visited by devotees from around the world. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti lay here in peace. A unique kind of peace take over you once you enter through the gate of the Dargah. The magical aura of this place captivates many hearts, and people from different faith come and worship here. Although the dargah is always crowded, the best time to visit Ajmer Sharif is during the Urs festival. The place comes to life during this festival that is held annually.
