Himalayas

An enchantment territory of the nature, Himalayas is where the magnificence of the world’s highest mountains is mirrored amid the rugged beauty and unique culture. From Jammu & Kashmir in North India to Arunachal Pradesh in North East India, the gigantic Himalayan Mountain Range separates Indian subcontinent with the rest of Asia.

 

This is where the tallest peak of Earth is located; the Mouth Everest stands tall at a height of 29,029 ft between China and Nepal border. There are many more mountain peaks situated in the sub ranges and hill ranges of Greater Himalayas, such as Kangchenjunga and Nanda Devi in Shivalik Hills or Sub-Himalayan Range and the Lower Himalayan or Mahabharat Range.

 

About the Himalayas

The Great Himalayas is further divided into two major sub ranges, known as Sub-Himalayan Range and Lower Himalayan Range or Mahabharat Range.

 

These two Sub-Himalayan ranges are home to various highest peaks, glaciers, hill stations, river valleys, flora and fauna, attracting tourists from around the world.

 

Shivalik Hills is the youngest mountain range of the Himalayas and is known for its Shivalik Fossil Park, Doon valley and world famous Corbett National Park.

 

Highest Mountain Peaks

The Great Himalayas are home to World’s Highest Mountain Peaks, including Mount Everest. Majority of the Himalayan Mountain Peaks are situated in the Karakoram Ranges, Garhwal Himalaya and Kanchenjunga.
The highest Himalaya Mountain Peaks in India are Kanchenjunga, Nanda Devi and Kamet.

 

The River Valley

Not just the highest mountain peaks, the region is also home to the world’s major rivers such as the Tsangpo- Brahmaputra, the Indus and holiest river the Ganges. The rivers rise next to Greater Mount Kailash of the Himalayas. The major sources of these mighty rivers are Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal.

 

The majestic views of the beautiful Himalayan Foothills, snow clad mountains, and hills covered with flowers in Valley of Flowers National Park are bound to leave one mesmerised. Other major rivers of the Himalayas are the Sutlej River, Brahmaputra River and Karnali River.

 

Wildlife

The Himalayas are home to India’s rarest wild animals such as the endangered snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Red Panda and Himalayan Black Bear. Treasuring India’s exotic flora and fauna with wonderful avifauna, the wildlife of the Himalayas include Himalayan Quail, Western Tragopan, Black-lored Tit and Cheer Pheasant. The birds of prey found in the region are the Golden Eagle, the Lammergeier vulture Mountain Hawk Eagle and majestic Himalayan Griffon Vulture, an Old World vulture.

 

National Parks and Sanctuaries

The Himalayan Region houses some of India’s major National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. Some of the prized possessions of the regions are Great Himalayan National Park, Khangchendzonga National Park, Corbett national park and Hemis national park along with sanctuaries like Kedarnath Wild Life Sanctuary, Mountain Goat Sanctuary, Fambong La Wild Life Sanctuary and Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary.

 

Adventurous Souls

One of the major factors that attract tourists to the Himalayas is its adventure. The region is famous as the hub for all season adventure sports such as Skiing, Paragliding, Trekking, White Water Rafting, and Mountain Climbing. Trekking and Hiking in the Great Himalayan Trail is the best experience of the region.

 

Ayurveda

The Great Himalayas are also famous for its Ayurvedic Herbs used to cure different diseases. Himalayan Ayurveda offers natural care for skin, digestion and other health issues. The water bodies of Himalaya are also considered pure and containing minerals and herbals.

 

Pilgrimage

The region holds various sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists. Mount Kailash, which is considered as a sacred Hindu pilgrim spot, is also located here. Himalaya is home to great Hindu God Lord Shiva. There are many famous temples situated in the region such as Kedarnath, Amarnath and Tungnath.
